Lord Jagannath, the Lord of the universe is an Incarnation of Lord Vishnu. First He had His abode in the temple at Puri, in the eastern coast of India, known as Jagannath dham. It dates back to thousands of years when King Indradyumna and Queen Gundicha installed Shree Jagannatha at the wish of the Almighty. But the modern history mentions it as eight century old when the present form of Jagannath Temple was built which is misleading. Jagannath Dham at Puri is one of the four Holy 'Dhamas' (holy seats) of the Hindus including temples at Rameshwaram, Dwaraka, and Badrinath. The Jagannath idol is black in color. He is worshipped along with His brother Balabhadra and sister Suvadra. None of the idols has proper arms. For every characteristic of the deities there is meaningful explanation not only in the perspective of spiritual background but also pertinent to practical philosophies of life and teachings. The legendary account of Jagannath's creation as mentioned in the 'Skanda Purana', 'Brahma Purana' and other Puranas, and later in other Oriya works, state that originally Jagannath Dev was worshipped as Neel Madhab by Viswavasu, a Savar King (Tribal Chief). Having had the dream when the Lord expressed His wish that the king should bring Nil-Madhav and worship Him, King Indradyumna of Kalinga, sent a brahmin, Bidyapati, to locate the deity and ultimately the Lord of the universe had His holi abode at Puri and is worshiped as Shree Jagannath. He was asked to build the idol with three pieces of Neem wood that would be found at the seashore, and true to the prophecy, the King found the neem wood trunks at the seashore and requested Lord Vishwakarma, the heavenly engineer/ mason / architect / sculpture who modelled the Jagannath idol. Lord jagannath is the living God for whom daily rituals, except the puja and aarti, are nothing but the daily routine of a human being.

The age-old tradition ratha yatra, 'the car festival' has special significance for the entire humanity. On the occasion of rath yatra Lord Jagannath comes on the street to meet one and all regardless of caste, creed and religion. While on the street during 'pahandi vijay' everybody can touch the deities. It is the grandest festival on earth. Everything is on a scale befitting the great Lord. Having the darshan / sight / glimpse of the Lord Jagannatha on the chariot is the most auspicious thing in anybody's life by which the ultimate goal of human life is achieved. That's why people over the world throng to ratha Yatra festival to have Lord Jagannath's darshan and pull the Chariot.

In order to bless the people of Canada and for that matter many in North America the Lord along with His brother Balabhadra and Sister Subhadra landed at Toronto to help begin ratha yatra and to also have His permanent abode too. And thus the deities in a temple were housed at Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Toronto.
